Dan left from Kittery Maine and is currently stand up paddling to the Canadian border. The first person to SUP the Maine Coast.

Growing up in Raleigh NC I first got my start on the water with my local paddling club, the Carolina Canoe Club. I was one of those weird homeschoolers and as soon as I was done with my lessons for the day, I would head outside and kayak. All this time kayaking whitewater lead me all over the Southeast, spending countless days on rivers like the Pigeon, New River Gorge and Wilson’s Creek. In addition to my whitewater paddling, my family spent a lot of time in the Outer Banks of NC (and we still do), which meant I clocked hours, which turned into years, of surfing and spending time in the ocean. You could say I enjoy being on (and in) the water.

At the age of 18 I became the youngest person to ever be certified as a Level 5 ACA Swiftwater Rescue Instructor. At this time I started to teach whitewater kayaking and Swiftwater Rescue and also leading adventure based summer camps for teens. After marrying my wife Bethany, we became the youngest people (24 and 22) to kayak, unsupported, the 2,500 hundred miles of the East Coast of the United States. After reaching Key West via our kayaks in 2009, I began working for kayak outfitters and became the Director of Guiding and Instruction for a large Kayak and SUP company in Boston, Charles River Canoe and Kayak.

In 2014, I moved to Portland, Maine, and have taken some time away from paddling as a career path in order pursue my photography career with Bethany and Dan Photography. I still surf and paddle regularly, and have added sailing to the mix too! After spending a few years out of the professional paddling world, I am excited to kick things off again with the SUP expedition to become the first person to SUP the coast of Maine.
